About Charl

Biography

South African artist Charl Gräbe was born in 1970, and obtained an Honors degree in Information Design from the University of Pretoria. He is also a qualified lecturer, with distinction, from University of Liverpool. He currently teaches A Level Art in Shanghai.

His work is included in collections in China, Brussels, Barcelona, London, Germany, USA, Australia and South Africa. He has been invited to the Venice Biennale, and an artist in residence at Sincresis, Florence.

Charl explores themes of dystopia, raising questions about consumerism and the environment. His work is a play on opposites: absence and presence, surface and depth, abstract and concrete.
